Inquiring Musicians and Artists

Musicians
Lazy Daze focuses intensely at bringing local and national performers to her stage. Preferably, the tunes one would hear would be acoustic ranging from roots rock, folk, jazz, blues, blue grass, and anything else mellow and fun for the whole family. We have musicians from as far away as California and New York, to the musician who just lives down the street stopping by to play and drink a little coffee or tea. So come one, come all, and if you play a tune or two, contact us and share some of your melodies sometime. If you do wish to share your tunes, please email Lazy Daze at lessbucks@hotmail.com.

Artists

Irvington was built long ago with the idea of it being a place of refuge for aspiring artists. That is why Irvington is named after Washington Irving (who wrote the “Legend of Sleepy Hallow”); the streets are named after Hawthorne, Leland, and many others artists. But that was over a century ago, and after all this time and through all of the changes Irvington has experienced, she has still held onto her beauty and charm. And deep beneath the present and future, there lies quietly the spirit of this vision, just waiting to be unleashed once again. Irvington --- the community of artists.

Lazy Daze Coffee House has always supported the artist in and outside of Irvington as best as she could; however, with limited space, it was a hodgepodge and mixed array of art from various artists and artist groups that one would find hanging from our walls, and we will continue with this concept. But now, we would like to do something in addition to this by honoring and specifically targeting an individual artist.

Lazy Daze Coffee House will leave the existing room for mixed art, while a second room (that was added due to our expansion) will be available for one artist exclusively on a month-to-month contract. There will be an option available for the artist, if they choose so, to have an opening event to showcase their art. This would entail Lazy Daze hosting the event that would be accompanied with music and that would suit the art being displayed. We hope by doing this small gesture along with so many others here in our community, that one day Irvington will once again be the Jerusalem or the Mecca for all artists everywhere who reside within the great city of Indianapolis.

Serious inquiries only for those who wish to display their art. Contact Jeff Coppinger via email at lessbucks@hotmail.com.

Other People’s Coffee: Indianapolis, IN

Coffee Shop: Lazy Daze Coffee House

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana

Drink: Latte

Drinker: Seth Daire

It was a week ago, on a business trip to Indianapolis, Indiana, otherwise known as the Home of the Colts. I decided I wanted to experience some good coffee while I was there, and so went to Google Maps. Fortunately, one of the better-rated coffee houses was not too far away from my hotel, known as Lazy Daze Coffee House. They have an interesting logo. So I plotted a course, and the next morning, asked my coworker if I could get some coffee. And so we went, and you know, it looked so much closer on the map. After almost 15 minutes, I started to wonder if we would find it, but then I saw the logo and we pulled around to the one-way street (from the other way, of course).

The décor was nice. In most respects, it fits the typical image of a coffee house. The barista was chatting with a friend, and then we chatted a bit as she took my order. She was friendly. I ordered myself a latte, straight up. I asked who their roaster was, took note of it, and then forgot. There wasn’t much time to soak in the atmosphere, as we had an agenda for the day, and the coffee house already took more time than I anticipated. Once I got in the car, I sipped the latte, and it was good, really good. That made me happy. It was well worth the time to have the coffee experience that morning. And being that I worked till midnight that day, well, at least I started the day with a good latte.

I love this place. I can sneak away from my husband and come here and have a cup of coffee when he is at work. There are plenty of hot young guys that hang around and I like to sit outside in my sexy shorts.

I have met several men here and brought them home. I try to go everyday in the summer.

Lazy Daze:Neighborhood Coffee Shop: I found this coffee shop when I moved to Irvington, 2 yrs. ago.

It's atmosphere is cozy. The employees get to know you personally. More than just coffee available.

A place to relax and also catch up with the news in Irvington.

A great place for a date, or to relax with your neighbors.

My first evening with my husband, I beat him at checkers. Chess is also available.

Lazy Daze Coffee: I found this place when I started my new job at Walgreens off of Washington St. and Ritter. This place has the BEST coffee! I'm hooked. They're reasonably priced too. It's got an old school sign out front too. It's also got bands that come in and play. That's all I've seen so far but I won't stray too far from it.

No Lazy Days at Lazy Daze

By: Robert L. Friedly

There are no lazy days for Lazy Daze coffeehouse proprietor Jeff Coppinger, a modestly-bearded 32-year-old seen in his blue and white biker head scarf prowling around Johnson St. on the east side of the old Irving Theater, or chatting with customers or whipping up a latte. He’s got too many ideas about what he likes about Irvington and what he wants to happen there.

He’s had the “Daze” open now for more than a year (since late summer 2003). He’s got three part-time employees helping pour the coffee. Folks sprawl on chairs on the wooden deck or sidewalk when the weather permits, reading, drinking, talking in the shade of the awning or trees, some geeking their computers, the place being rigged up for wireless internet. He will be opening an organic and natural foods emporium in January, hopefully across the street because his IUPUI economics class taught him that the same people who buy fancy coffee are attracted to natural foods places.

And, by the way, about 60 percent drink lattes, 40 percent coffee, a figure just the opposite his original expectations.

Jeff believes if he can get just a miniscule portion of the 15,000 cars the little rubber strip across Washington says pass by daily, he can make it go. He’s had a summer’s experience with the new deck behind the establishment drawing loungers, singers, artists, guitar players and poets — who donate their offerings, just for public exposure or for their love of a revitalizing Irvington.

And revitalizing Irvington is a major Coppinger objective. A member of the board of the non-profit Irving Theater Foundation, he has dreams of the Irving Theater becoming a center for visual arts, movies, music and the performing arts. He fantasizes about free movies for the kids on Saturday, and teaching them about the arts. While praising the eating establishments already in Irvington, he hopes the community will one day attract “over-priced, fine dining” with enough visitor business to warrant horse and buggy rides — “the neighborhood is perfect for it,” he says.

The place has an enormous sense of community, and a huge mixture of political and life styles, he enthuses. It is a wonderful family and fun location, and needs to be a place where people go to shop. “In Irvington, you ought to be able to do everything.”

Born in Community East Hospital, learning to swim in Ellenberger Park, graduating from Howe High School (after three years at Arlington), romancing his wife Shelly on the bench at the eighteenth hole of the Pleasant Run Golf Course, Jeff fell in love with Irvington. “I have so many memories of this place, the beautiful winding streets. I like the peace and serenity of the place. Why do we have to drive 30 minutes to Broad Ripple?” Irvington was just screaming coffeehouse.

Jeff and Shelly and their two girls, Alyssa, 12, who attends the Irvington Charter School, and Parris, 3, live northwest of Ellenberger Park, near ninth and Leland. He has had a life outside Irvington — four years in the Navy in New Orleans and some schooling in Tennessee. Coppinger still needs 12 college credits to graduate in political science. He has a fascination with the law, particularly with first amendment rights, and harbors a yearning to go to law school one day. His Navy duty was as a military policeman. He also has toyed with entering law enforcement in Indianapolis.

By the way, there are “no carb” cold drinks and even “no sugar added” lattes at the Daze, which is now open 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. most days. But there also are pastries and ice cream sufficient to induce diabetic comas of legendary proportions

Here at Lazy Daze, we give our customers more than just a delicious cup of coffee or tea. We give everyone a place to come to and relax, converse with friends, read a book, or catch a live tune from a musician passing through town. Lazy Daze takes a lot pride in giving her customers an excellent product with a non-corporate style of doing business with those who love a premium beverage. When one walks into Lazy Daze, they find themselves in a bohemian/New Orleanish atmosphere that sits in the center of historical Irvington. The interior displays art from various artists who reside in and around Irvington. It is small, quaint, warm, and intimate seating around 15-20 people. The outside seating during the warm seasons allows for additional seating on a deck that is shaded by a large tulip tree. The aura of the coffeehouse takes on a village feel and all are welcome. The coffees that Lazy Daze offers are 40% socially and environmentally conscience, which entails coffees that range from fair trade, organic, rainforest alliance, and bird friendly. The remaining coffees are single origin, or in other words, estate coffees that are bought directly from the coffee plantations. As for our espresso, a slight sweetness is found because it is a lightly roasted bean called a Café Bella, which makes a smooth tasting latte, cappuccino, or any other espresso based drink. We also carry a premium selection of organic loose-leaf teas. For those who enjoy the world of tea, we have several black, green, and herbal teas to choose from. We also carry an oolong and a white tea for the connoisseurs. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to send us what you have to lazydazecoffeehouse@hotmail.com. We are always open for suggestions, because it is our goal to give the best cup of coffee or tea that any coffeehouse could offer.

Lazy Daze is *the* place to hang out on the east side of Indy! Irvingtonians love the delicious coffee and specialty drinks Jeff Coppinger and Katie and the rest of the crew serve. They always greet customers with a friendly smile, the free Wi-Fi access is stellar, and the outdoor seating rocks. But best of all, Lazy Daze is more than a coffee shop--it's a community gathering-place. Lazy Daze supports Irvington treasures like the Benton House by helping with publicity and fundraising efforts. The coffee shop attracts people from all over the city with fun events like poetry readings and acoustic concerts. Irvington wouldn't be Irvington anymore without Lazy Daze!! Thanks Jeff--keep up the good work!

Lazy Daze Coffehouse is an oasis of tranquility in the midst of hective lives that appeals to people of all ages and takes me back to the early 60's during Grad School in Bloomington.. People sit on its squshy couches or outside on the sidewalk or deck. Some of them write away at their laptops. Someone is always reading a book or newspaper. Others chat quietly of listen to the music. What peace! Rose Mary Clarke

Lazy Daze is my public living room. I always start with cafe du jour, mid-size, and then one or two refills. Keeps me awake and makes me happy. Great ice cream selections. You just have to try the espresso flavor. All sorts of teas and coffee drinks made before your very eyes. And there's a wide selection of current and recent magazines lying around. I bring in some of my mags, and a few others do, too. Good selections of music plays through the speakers, and real live music is performed two or three times a week in the summer -- sometimes out on the deck. The patio is covered now, so you can enjoy the rain. Poetry night is Thursday. Barristas to die for. Tip 'em big. And the Bread Ladies are right there to amaze you, too. LD is a central place for Irvington, and we're a hospitable bunch. Come in, get your beverage, and sprawl on one of the sofas. LD is funky but good enough to bring out-of-towners to. It makes for a good social habit, and its tasty!
